Game # 93
Chicago Blackhawks-[3] @ [1]-Montr?al Canadiens

The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Montreal Canadiens in a close 3-1 bout in the biggest hockey-crazed city in Canada. Montreal fans were not happy with this loss but the Habs can’t be blamed as the Blackhawks were a wrecking force throughout the season. It was a tight game with Hawks getting scoring from a variety of lines against Kostitsyn’s lone goal.

The Blackhawks were the “team to beat” this entire season. If a team ever wanted to see if they were in playoff shape, they would await their match-up against the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks led the league in “Least Goals Against” and are a very sound team offensively and defensively. They had a surprising breakout season from Dave Bolland (11-13-24), along with contributions from Sharp (10-11-21), Kane (11-7-18), Toews (11-8-19) and Hossa (6-14-20). There’s not enough room here to list all the positives about the Blackhawks. You want to hear something negative? After going 11-1-0 in the first half, they went on to win 9 of their final 12 games to finish 20-1-3. Yeah, they should realllllllly be in panic mode.

The Canadiens had a rough opening night as they lost back-to-back games, but they picked it up and won 3 of their next 4 games and finished the season with a 9-0-15 record. The Canadiens have a well-balanced attack as well with Gomez (10-9-19) leading the team in points, along with Gionta (7-9-16), Kostitysn (9-6-15) and Plekanec (5-5-10). They still need more goal-scoring from the rest of the forwards, especially Mike Cammalleri (3-6-9). The defence will have to pitch in as well because the 6 defensemen account for NO goals out of the total 53 goals scored.

It’s pretty simple to explain what the Blackhawks have to do in order to win this series: just keep doing whatever they were during the entire season. Their recipe is working perfectly so why mess with it? Don’t fix what ain’t broke, y’know? The real head-scratcher comes with explaining what the Canadiens must do to beat the Hawks. The Canadiens ranked 12th overall in “Most Goals For” and allowed the 4th “Most Goals Against” in the entire league. So, with a below-average offense and very vulnerable defence, the Canadiens have to find a bounce here and there and get timely goals from everyone to win this series. This will have to be a team-effort if they want to get past these Blackhawks.

“The Habs will need a huge series from (Carey) Price and will need to take advantage of the few mistakes that the Blackhawks’ defence will make if they want to get to the second round”, said Coach Johnyboy of the Hurricanes.

“Blackhawks biggest mistake in this series will be underestimating their opponent”, said Coach HockeyMadness of the Wild.
