Game # 103
Columbus Blue Jackets-[6] @ [0]-Nashville Predators
The Blue Jackets dominated the Predators in their only encounter, disposing them in a 6-0 win. Nash had a 4-point night along with Vermette picking up 3 points. The Predators’ undisciplined play proved costly and the Blue Jackets converted on their opportunities.
The Blue Jackets are a very poised and well-balanced team, much like the Chicago Blackhawks. They can kill you early on by scoring a ton of goals or they can compete in a never-ending defensive battle. They can joust with any team in this league and will most definitely come at you with everything they’ve got. Antoine Vermette (15-17-32) and Rick Nash (16-15-31) are going to be handful for every team. If you somehow manage to shut them down, you must next take care of Jakub Voracek (14-15-29). There’s so much offensive power on this team that you need to make sure all six of your defensemen are on the same page. The Blue Jackets had a great record of 18-0-6 at the end of the season.
The Predators seemed to have changed their style of play this season. What is otherwise known as a defensive-minded club has now changed into being more offensive. It paid off as the Predators had the 8th highest “Goals For” in the league however it still didn’t translate to winning more consistently. The Predators finished the season with a 10-0-14 record. The bright side is that their top players are producing more and earning their money as David Legwand (14-5-19) led the team in points and goals. Martin Erat (5-9-14) and Sergei Kostitsyn (10-5-15) provide a good amount of playmaking and scoring skill. However, both Shea Weber (1-6-7) and Ryan Suter (0-9-9) combined for only one goal and are expected to carry this team from the back end.
The Predators need more scoring from their defensemen and they need to just tweak their defence a bit more to stop the Blue Jackets explosive attack. The Blue Jackets will continue to rely on their top 5 point-getters (Vermette, Nash, Voracek, Huselius and Umberger) to get them past this hungry Predators squad.
“Nashville will have to stay out of the penalty box ... Columbus (Blue Jackets) have a deadly Power Play”, said Coach Johnyboy of the Hurricanes.
“Coach Currystain, if you ever get a 2- or 3-goal lead over the Blue Jackets, don’t even think about letting up. Blue Jackets are a “never-say-die” team and will not let up even for a second”, said Coach HockeyMadness of the Wild
