Game # 214
New Jersey Devils-[0] @ [6]-Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames disposed of the Devils in quick fashion as they won 6-0. The Devils had no response to Jarome Iginla’s 5-point night, including a hat trick by Jarome Iginla. Flames were able to easily shut down the Devils in this game
The Flames had a mediocre 6-1-5 start to the season at the halfway point. But they really picked things up after that as they went on a 10-0-2 run to finish the season and vault them into 6th place. They disposed of some very good teams in their final 12 games, including the then-first place team Minnesota Wild in a 7-3 victory and the Carolina Hurricanes in a 3-0 victory. What this shows is that the Flames can easily step up to the plate and perform above their expectations and surprise even their own home fans. Thanks to that late push in the second half, Jarome Iginla (17-9-26) finally got things going and became the team’s leading point-getter and goal-scorer. Brenden Morrison (5-15-20) dropped to second place but even so, had a great rebound season. The Flames ranked 4th in the league for “Most Goals For” and 6th in the league for “Least Goals Against”. They cleaned up their act and are set for a deep playoff run.
The Devils are a very streaky team and have had some very whacky games. Devils’ fans have seen them take 3-2 and 3-1 victories over the Blue Jackets and the Wild, both of whom rank in the top 5. Then they’ve seen themselves drop 2-1 and 5-4 losses to two non-playoff teams: the Blues and the Coyotes, who are both in the bottom 6. Management, the coaching staff and the fans all want some consistency from these Devils if they want to ever get past the first round. The Devils finished this season with a 10-0-14 record. Their leading point-getters were Zach Parise (7-7-14) and Travis Zajac (9-5-14). Surprisingly, Brian Rolston (5-8-13) had a breakout season as he finished third on the team for most points. This team has suited up four rookies on their roster (Tedenby, Josefson, Palmieri and Fayne) and are really relying on veteran leadership and timely scoring to win games. They have the third-worst GFA amongst the playoff teams with a 1.96 GFA.
Flames...just do what you have been doing. Plain and simple. But don’t get too overconfident because the Devils can easily take a bite out of another top-seeded team when they are caught off-guard. The Devils are going to have to score more goals. They cannot expect to win games by scoring one goal per game anymore. Martin Brodeur is not who he used to be and neither is their defence. Parise and Zajac should combine to help the Devils offensively but Kovalchuk and Elias need to start producing more as the secondary unit. Rolston’s production has been a surprise and if he keeps scoring timely goals, that will give the Devils the much-needed offensive boost that they need.
“I know our squad underestimated the Devils”, said Coach HockeyMadness of the Wild when asked about the Devils. “We were coming off a high after our huge 5-1 over the Flyers and we completely underestimated the hard-working group that Coach Tactical is working with in that organization.”
